Why fire and smoke control doors for safety in your company

A fire can never be ruled out. It is therefore all the more important to take fire protection measures which, in the event of an actual fire, inhibit the fire, stop it from spreading and reduce the build-up of smoke to a minimum. This creates valuable time that allows people to be evacuated from the burning building and the approaching fire service to carry out its work under improved conditions.

Fire doors and smoke control doors are self-closing fireproof doors which have a special seal all the way around. This swells under heat and prevents smoke from getting into the adjacent rooms.

Inspection and maintenance

Operators of buildings are required to use fire-retardant fire doors and smoke-control doors and to have them inspected regularly. This ensures that they are in good working order and can also be closed without any problems in an emergency.

Fire doors and gates are to be inspected regularly in accordance with the National Technical Approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassung) / the test certificate to ensure that they can be closed properly in an emergency.

They are inspected in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines or the Technical Rule for Workplaces ASR A 1.7.

Standards and guidelines

The Technical Rule for Workplaces ASR A 1.7. reflects the state of the art, occupational healthcare and hygiene for the installation and operation of doors and gates. It sets out in concrete terms the requirements of the Ordinance on Workplaces (Verordnung über Arbeitsstätten) and serves as a guideline for employers. Doors in power-operated gates must be accessible and wicket doors should be avoided.

DIN 31051 and TRBS 1203 are other relevant standards. Fire doors must be self-closing.

Fire doors in public buildings

Operators of buildings frequented by people must ensure that a careful fire protection concept is in place. This also includes installed fire doors and smoke-control doors. These are installed in signposted escape routes and between fire compartments. In industrial buildings these doors and gates are also used where there is an increased risk of fire (boiler rooms, underground car parks, etc.).

Smoke-control doorscreate time

Smoke-control doors are self-closing, fireproof doors which have a special seal all the way around. This swells under heat and prevents smoke from getting into the adjacent rooms. As a result, in the first few minutes emergency services are able to save lives without using breathing masks.
